Maddon Brittingham had a record-smashing performance that propelled the sixth-seeded Firebirds to a 61-47 victory over the visiting 11th-seeded Olathe East Hawks in the opening round of the class 6A playoffs Friday night.

Free State’s Stancil reaches Day 2 of 6A state golf, finishes 42nd; youthful Firebirds hope state experience will benefit team’s future
Free State sophomore Laurel Stancil led the way for the Firebirds at the 6A state tournament. Stancil shot a 90 on Day 1, allowing her to make the cut for Day 2 by a few strokes. Free State collectively shot a 397.
